Finlaystone House
Woodlands

There are approximately 140 acres of woodlands at Finlaystone, including trees which are estimated to be well over 400 years old. The Estate has several trails of varying degrees of length and difficulty. Some are accessible by pram or with small children. All are designed to lead you through the varied environment and landscapes within the Estate. Maps and further information are available in the visitor centre. There are a number of BBQ sites in the woods which visitors are welcome to use.

The woodland is host to a wide variety of wildlife including roe deer, fox, grey squirrel, stoat, three species of raptor and a large colony of herons.

The woodland floor has a fantastic display of fungi and flora including species such as primrose, wood sorrel, wood anemone, wild garlic and dog’s mercury, all of which are indicative of ancient or long-established woodland. Follow the changing seasons and seek out snow trails and snowdrops in winter, bluebells in spring, wildflowers and pond life during summer and a vast array of colourful berries & leaves in autumn. In addition, you can also see a terrific variety of lichens around the estate and a downloadable guide is available below.

The neighbouring mud flats on the River Clyde are designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest because of their national importance for wintering birds such as redshank, greenshank, oystercatcher, goldeneye and eider.

Surveys have shown that the estate is host to over 50 species of breeding birds and regular sightings include robin, blue tit, great tit, long tailed tit, blackbird, buzzard, jay, kestrel, sparrow hawk, chaffinch, bullfinch, thrush, grey heron, swift, swallow, house martin, sparrow, wagtails, tree creeper, tawny owl and dipper.
