June 2019 Report

June in the Garden 2019
Late May and June is undoubtedly the most colourful period in the garden here at Finlaystone and this year has been particularly good. This springs flowers have lasted well and have combined with the rush of early summer flowers to make the garden more colourful than I’ve ever seen it before.
Must sees in the garden in June include a number of small trees: Embothrium coccineum (the Chilean firetree), Laburnum anagyroides (Golden rain tree), Enkianthus campanulatus, and the rarely seen and very beatiful Halesia carolina.
Jobs to be getting on with this month include putting in supports for herbaceous plants that are susceptible to wind and rain such as thalictrum, oriental poppies and of course dahlias with their large heavy flower heads. Many early spring flowering plants should be pruned now. Forsythia and weigela are examples and remember with Forsythia to cut out a proportion of the older thicker stems to prevent the plant from becoming too congested. In the veg plot an important job is to put supports in place for peas and beans. It’s important to do this early as it will greatly reduce the damage from slugs and snails.
Here at Finlaystone we are always happy to welcome volunteers into the garden where the gardener will always be able to find work for those interested in getting their hands dirty.
