FOWL PLAY’ IN FINLAYSTONE GARDENS

Extra help has been drafted in to help the new gardener at Finlaystone Country Estate at Langbank. The ‘help’ in the form of four chickens and a cockerel is playing a vital part in removing weed growth in the vegetable garden located in the walled garden.

Gardener Colin Hume says ‘The chickens are playing a vital role in preparing the soil by eating weeds and other vegetation, scratching away their roots and helping to breakdown the soil surface. In addition, the ‘deposits’ they leave behind are a very useful ‘green’ manure/soil conditioner. On top of all this we are also rewarded with a regular supply of free range eggs!’
