Unusual ‘Chicken’ spotted at Finlaystone! When Finlaystone Rangers were out on a litter pick the other day the noticed an unusual ‘chicken’ in a large old oak tree. Head Ranger, David Finnis, said ‘It is “Chicken of the woods”, (Laetiporus sulphureus) a fairly common decay fungi found on Oak, Sweet Chestnut, Yew and Cherry (dark heartwoods). It is a brown rot which causes the localised area of the tree to become brittle and prone to structural failure. It won’t kill the tree but may cause it eventually to shed branches. It is edible and considered by some to be a delicacy.’ He continues ‘We have a fantastic variety of fungi at Finlaystone and it’s great that this one has been spotted especially during the ‘International Year of Bio-diversity’ For further information please telephone 01475 540505 or visit the web site at www.finlaystone.co.uk Ends ….from the peace and tranquillity of the gardens to the fun and excitement of the woodland play areas, Finlaystone has something for all.
